Iota Design Lab aims to re-frame the apartment building as a space of opportunity for conversation and connection, where we call into question the individuated nature of apartment living.

Compartmentalized and distanced from the action of the streets below, apartment dwellers reveal the irony of having neighbours in such proximity, all the while showing low levels of communication and neighbourliness. What gives? How can we find prosperity in what is typically considered to be the compromise of apartment living? And how can we inspire civic engagement through phatic conversation? Our urban societies are becoming ever more individualized and civically disengaged. Many factors contribute to this condition, including screen technologies, the shape of the built environment, cars being prioritized over walk-ability, and the stress that accumulates in high density urban environments. Iota Design Lab is a platform to address these issues by providing open-source micro-interventions that apartment dwellers can introduce into their own apartment communities, to bridge communication and build a network of support and sharing.
